Teacher Feedback

Kharis you have shown a good understanding of the codes and conventions of CD covers in the draft ancillary work - well done. Targets: 1. Work with your group to begin the video shoot as time is now of the essence 2. Continue to update your blog regulary with evidece of work in progress and production updates

Album cover drafts

These are the possible designs that we have collectively drafted:

After considering the positives and negatives for each of our drafts,we as a group chose to use design three due to the fact that it is a representation of the direction we want to take with our artist. We want it to feel like our artist is bringing a mainstream feel to grime music that usually a niche genre that doesn't get much recognition, and we have chosen to do this using colours.

Ideas for the video!

Video Idea!

As a group we discussed the fact that there are many stereotypes surrounding our choice of track due to the fact that the genre is grime, because of this we have chosen to subvert these stereotypes through our video whilst still having some genre influence.
The video is going to incorporate a picture montage that shows the artists journey through making it as an artist similar to the Kayne West 'Through the wire' video where he has the moving images portraying various parts of his journey. this mainly is to help the genre still be recognisable as well as the fact its going to portray a different kind of artist for the audience to see making his character more three dimensional in the sense that as an audience we are allowed to see some emotion through out the journey and where the performer has come from allowing it to be easier to relate to.
Taking more inspiration from the artist Kayne West we have decided to include animation to create a fun and relevant video that doesn't necessarily adhere to the stereotypes of grime as as genre. Animation would include text and images to represent what the performer is rapping about.

Tom Tripp- Dreamsville lyrics

Song Lyrics

Hey, hey ay yo it's my time,
living it up and when the sun shines
see me with my homies just having a fun time
rapping in a circle, dropping funny punch lines
the good days always seem to rush by
i just wanna stay young so i can kick back
playing footy in the park buss a flip flap
Tick Tack man hes whack send the bruddah home
and if he comes back then we'll knock him off his throne
sipping lemonade you know that it's Sicilian
i love the holidays every days brilliant
and you know that i don't boast too much but if your talking bout the money then I'm gonna make a million
bringing out tights tracks i lay the bars down
then i let my train move forward I'm on the right track
I'm gonna rise up shine like a bright star
look down on the fakes then i fly past
look at my life man i day dream daily, feeling kinda lazy dreams got me crazy
ima regular guy but i really do skate so Ive been on my grind
ima tryna bring a new sound to the underground of the UK
know that I'm out here fighting for the crown of the scene
i know I'm only 17 but i know theres better things out in the world for me
so ima keep smiling, shining, rhyming
until i reach the top, yo i gotta keep climbing
but then again they say its all about the timing
so love me or hate me ima do my thing
because I'm married to the dream
didn't wanna be the best man
looking down with a birds eye view bev gang
so when life gets hard and you feel weak
pick yourself up live free
ima actor and a artist aiming for the top
no matter what my past is
and lately Ive been really busy
but when things are looking calm find me skating up in izzy
i ain't into that hardcore road life
i wanna live good and live free with no strife
i never mind my enemies, who wanna stay mad at me
i wanna make money to provide for my family
but nothing comes easy
you gotta persevere and keep faith bro believe me
i made a change to my attitude
so when I'm on stage all ma fans show me gratitude
and that's all for the better
and now i dress clean slim jeans and a sweater
a nine to five is selling you soul
so i pray for success and be bless when I'm old
ahh
free trip
so chef

Teacher Feedback

Kharis, you got off to a really good start with the research and planning work, producing level 3/4 quality textual analyses. It is therefore highly disappointing that this work has stalled and you have not updated your blog with the recent tasks set. You must put in the necessary time required of A Level study if you are achieve a level 3 or 4 overall. This will include ensuring that the video shoot is well executed and carefully filmed to fully realise the creative vision you and your peers have discussed.

Music video- Marxist Approach

Goldie- Inner City Life!

The videos narrative explores the lives of those that live an 'inner city' life meaning those specifically living within a council on estates, people with everyday worries such as bills. The artist is basically trying to highlight the reality of those that struggle. The setting and mise-en scene included in the video effectively come together to challenge the stereotypes that the dominant institutes have put in place in relation to the people represented in the video.
The video chooses to portray the message that the inner city lives has its struggles but it is not purely just the violence and negativity people believe surrounds it a Marxist would agree that this is a positive way to represent this ideology as it is highlighting reality.
The target audience for this specific text would be the people that the video is trying to represent this can be said due to the fact that these people would appreciate the true representation as apposed to the stereotype they are usually represented with.

Choice of Track

As a group we have chosen to use the track Dreamsville by Tomm Tripp, this was a final decision due to the fact that the song had the best peer feedack and collectively we felt the song had the best possible video outcomes as the song didn't limit our creatvity.

Summary of peer feedback!

We played our three possible song choices to our peers this is a summary of the feedback

Jasmine Lauren- I resign
-Vocally the track and artist were strong
- The song leans toward a mixture of narrative and performance style due to the fact that it was an R'n'B track.
- The track had limitations because it would become stereotypical of a music video of that genre so our audience wouldn’t find anything within it that stood out.

Tom Tripp- Dreamsville
- Although the song came from a 'grime' background it didn’t have the usual lyrics so due to the fact that the lyrics were somewhat aspiration it opened up video possibilities.
-The song made the audience picture a narrative based video that pictured the life of the artist.
- the audience also felt that there was a risk that the video may become a stereotypical grime video and as a result could end up looking very cheap and unprofessional.
- Also the audience thought the performer would have to be very comfortable and maybe even already someone that could carry the look.

JW- Intrigue
- The track was a typical slow R'n'B track so therefore leaned toward a narrative and performance based video.
- It would be difficult to find an artist so comfortable to perform to the song
- Due to the nature of the song video ideas if not stereotypical would be limited.

Missy Eliott: All in my grill analysis!

In What Ways are women represented in the text? Missy Elliott chooses to subvert stereotypes within this music video. This can be said as throughout the video as the main character she is seen to dominate the males and move between cars and men due to the fact that she is unsatisfied. This representation of women would be frowned upon in a feminist eye. There is also the feeling of female authority as the police officers who due to their job role have dominance were all female this again was the artist’s way of reinforcing that female empowerment. How are men represented in the video? As the artist made the choice to make females hold the main power the males in the video seem to take the stereotypical role of females in a hip hop genre. i say this because there is the medium shot of the male and female in the video, during this shot the female is fully clothed whereas the male is topless. This proves to be effective as is seems be the reverse of normality due to the fact that it is usually the females in videos that are almost exploited due to their bodies. How might female audiences respond to this text? If this video was considered in a post- feminist view it would be seen as an empowering representation of the female gender as exploits the male gender and portrays them as beneath women. Whereas if it was considered by a feminist audience they may believe that artists choice to show the moving between men and overall masculine undertone to the females in the video is a misrepresentation of the gender.

Michael Jackson- You Rock my world analysis!

This music video appears to adhere to the theory of Vladimir Propp, this is a charcter based theory that relies on stereotypes to name the separate 'characters' within a piece of media text. When focusing on the main character Michael Jackson he falls into the stock character role of the hero, due to the fact that he is seen to win the dance battle and save the girl within the video with the assistance of 'the helper' Chris Tucker. The video also provides a chance for the stereotypical 'Princess' that seems to be in danger and need of help from the person who holds the lead male role. Intertexuality is also evident in the music video as some of the 'villains' in the video are actors famous for there villain roles in films. The best example of this world be Marlon Brando's feature as he is well known for playing the character of the godfather, so as soon as the audience sees him in the video they already have an assumption as to the role he will play. Michael Jackson also uses this video to play homage to himself by referencing his songs from the past such as 'the girl is mine' and 'beat it'. Chris tucker also imitates Michael Jackson's style of dance and speech.

Britney Spears: Post feminist and Feminist views!

Britney Spears as an artist regularly portrays a rather sexy and dominating attitude through her music and appearance. Focusing on her video ‘I wanna go’ I am going to outline the different feminist and post feminist views that may be raised throughout the video. Feminist view: -This view would state that the video is a typical version of a bad representation of females. -The main artist throughout the video is seen to use her minimal clothing and flirtatious nature to get males attention. -the female artist flashes the male police officer to prevent getting a parking ticket this objectifies women and their bodies. -The language used by the main artist would not be accepted. Post Feminist view: -A post feminist view of the video would be that is represents women in a positive light due to the fact that she is seen to be dominant an strong -The video suggests the main artist has power over the male gender, there is an example of this when she groped the male in the video, this would stereotypically be done by male to a female. -There is then a scene where the artist is seen to gain ‘powers’ and take down the paparazzi who are all males. This again is a representation of female dominance.

Analysis of album covers

This is the magazine advertisement for Ben Howard's album 'Every Kingdom'. It features all the conventions of a typical album advertisement, at the top of the poster is the artists name in big bold white writing, this makes it really stand out to the audience. Underneath that is the title of his album which is also in a white font and next to that it says 'the debut album' so this tells us its his first album and is an up and coming artist. At the bottom of the poster is all the details for the album, this is so people know when its out and it tells them that they can pre order it now. The poster is very plain and simple yet it is effective. The basic font represents the artists image as is he is a cool and calm artist.  The image is very simple but it focus's on image of the artist swimming alone in vast open waters.  The use of the cool blue colours of the water also represents the artist and his style.

Ben Howard is signed to communication records which are an independent record label who sign a lot of independent folk artists. This advert would appear in smaller independent music magazines who focus on less know acts with a niche audience but it could also appear in NME as NME covers a lot of genres and niche audiences.

Ben Howard would have a niche audience as folk isn't a very mainstream genre but he would appeal to both genders but mainly to males aged 16 - 24. He appeals to a younger audience as he is only a young man himself and people can relate to him.  The majority of his audience would probably be in social category E as they are most likely to b students.

This poster represents the artist and his image and his style. It is a plain simplistic design which represents his genre as he plays cool calm music, it also represents his style as he is a trendy young man who just wears casual clothing but it could also represent his
attitude.
